Sony announces their first UMPC

Sony jumped into the UMPC craze with a bang today – announcing what they call a ‘Micro PC.’

At launch, it appears that this device will run Windows XP exclusively an not the version created specifically for UMPCs.

the new device is to be part of Sony’s UX line and will have a 4.5-inch SVGA screen that can slide up to expose a QWERTY keyboard.

Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and the ability to connect to Cingular’s high-speed cellular-wireless EDGE network are all features to look forward to.

In addition to a biometric finger print sensor for security, the new UMPC will also have a ‘dock’ for at home use. The dock will consist of three USB 2.0 ports, an Ethernet port, a VGA port, and more.

This looks like one of the coolest devices to come from Sony in some time. Pricing is expected to be around $1,800 when it hits the shelves this summer.
