iPhone App Store Software Series: Shazam

Unless you’ve been living under a rock you may have already run across a review for the iPhone 2.0. Apple now officially has two mobile devices in their line-up, the iPhone and the iPhone 3G. There are many pros and cons to owning an iPhone, but the focus of this is software and the iPhone experience. If you have ever had the ‘what’s the name of that song playing you will like Shazam. This software available for free from the Apple Application Store puts a new twist on existing music identification software. Sporting a library of nearly 5 million tracks, and a streamlined interface, Shazam gives you more than just Artist and Song information.

The application launches within a few seconds of loading, and has one main button ‘Tag Now’.

Once that is selected, ten to fifteen seconds later you will have your results. This works on Edge, Wi-Fi and 3G. Of course with the latter youll have faster results.

The results are grouped into three sections.

Tag Result; shows the Artist, Title, Subtitle (if available), Label and Album info. The second is titled ‘More Tag Options’, this gives you a direct link to a YouTube video, and iTunes for purchase or preview. The final section is ‘Manage This Tag’. This allows you to edit or share the album art, or share the Tag info via email and finally an option to delete the Tag from your history.

Overall the program has had a 90% success rate in finding the song that is playing. It doesnt support singing or humming as some other musicID software, but the ability to find what you are looking for and find it fast makes this program worth the price!

Per Shazam’s website the Shazam application is available for free and can be downloaded from Apple’s App Store on iPhone or at iTunes in the following countries: Austria, Belgium, Canada, Switzerland, Germany, Denmark, Spain, Finland, France, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Sweden, United Kingdom, United States, Australia, New Zealand.
